Served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Participated in the Phillipine invasion of January 9, 1945 as a First Lieutenant with the 756th Field Artillery Battalion, Assistant Recon and Survey Officer. Lt. Col. Elisha K. Kane commanding. Subsequently promoted to Captain and awarded a Bronze Star for gallantry under fire.
Spent one year hitchhiking around Europe in the early 1970's. Taught English conversation for two years in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan.
